It started with an Oriole that made her nest in the rhododendron outside my bedroom window when I was eight. It was fascinating to see the oddly shaped sac hanging in the branches, to see her bringing food to the little mouths sticking up above the rim. Mostly I was struck by how close I was to these wild creatures, to see them living their normal life in such detail.
That started a lifelong interest in birds, and nature in general. It also opened my eyes to the fact that we are not separate from these things, but that we live together. Very closely. We share the neighborhood, from the bushes in front of the house to the woods where we like to walk the dog. We share the land and the resources, and the more wild creatures we see the healthier our environment.
